Replacing Damaged Goods

If you have home or renter’s insurance this is good news for you! Anything of value that has been damaged will most likely be covered for replacement.

Here are some steps you will want to take in order to claim them with your insurance company.

  1. Write down everything that has been damaged. Doesn’t matter the significance of the damage, just write it all down.
  2. Take pictures of all the damage products in your house. You can never have too many pictures.
  3. Call your insurance company and go over your policy to find out what exactly is covered and what is not.
  4. Fill out the required paperwork, be sure to make your list and photos available.
  5. Before your claim has been processed make sure the paperwork is correct and what has been discussed is what is on the paperwork.

If you have electronics that are under a separate warranty, for example through the manufacturer, go ahead and give them a call before you call your home owner insurance. A lot of times the warranty may be better through them. In addition, you won’t have to worry about policy changes after a claim with the less you do claim.

Replacing something large like a pool table or foosball table are not cheap to replace, so make sure you take your time reviewing everything.

Do your research and make sure you are buying a product that is great in quality and customer service.

How to Choose a Water Damage Restoration Company

dollar signChoosing a company to help restore a part of your life is never an easy task. This is a decision that should not be taken lightly.

There are several things that should be taken into consideration when deciding on what company to go with.

Here is what we recommend:

1. Certified

First and foremost, this is important. Certifications means that they have taken the proper steps and training to make sure that they understand the process and procedure of handing a sensitive situation like water damage.

2. Referrals

If you have a referral about a company this can be priceless. You have first hand information that this company has not hurt a previous close friend or family member.

Additionally, if the company knows that you are coming at them with a referral they are more opportune to make sure you are taken care of with the fullest extent.

3. Reviews

If you don’t know of anyone that can give your a personal recommendation google is your next step.  Read up on reviews. These are very helpful in determining if a certain company has had shortcomings and how bad.

4. Insurance Approved

Make sure you run the name of the company by your insurer. You don’t want to start a project only to find out that your insurance will not cover the company’s bill for one reason or another.

5. Price

Obviously this is a huge consideration. A hefty job like a water damage project comes with no easy price tag. This could be a make or break consideration if the bill comes in too high.

On the other hand, don’t go with just the cheapest option either. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Getting the cheapest company may also result in the cheapest job done.

No what what you decide the bottom line is to do your research. Make sure you are well informed about what the entire job entails from start to finish. You don’t want any unexpected surprises when you are dealing with a water damage issue.

Why is Mold So Bad?

One of the biggest problems when it comes to water damage isn’t necessarily the moment water is present, but it’s the weeks and months following the damage and mold begins to set in.

Even the smallest amount of water or moisture can lead to major mold problems that can debilitate a living space.

How it develops

Mold grows when there is moisture around. Standing water doesn’t even have to present in order for mold to grow. If you have a damp basement with poor air flow this can be a breeding ground for mold.

If you have water damage and it isn’t taken care of right away that can also lead to mold development.

Black Mold

Black mold is one of the most dangerous and harmful of all molds. It can cause  so many issues with the human body.

Symptoms of mold exposure can include the following:

  • Headache
  • Itchy/watery eyes
  • Sore Throat
  • Sinus Congestion
  • Skin Irritation

If you have any of these symptoms and believe you have exposure to black mold, consult your physician.

Clean Up

Dealing with mold is never an easy clean up. It’s recommended that only trained professionals deal with this type of repair and restore. But if you find yourself needed to care for it yourself you will want to keep these things in mind.

Protective Gear

First and foremost, you will need protective gear. This especially means getting a proper face mask to block the harmful spores from getting into your airways.

Unplugged electronics

Unplugged electronics and appliances carefully. Remove any and all furniture or like items away from the infected area.

Dry out infected areas

Clean up all the water, this may include getting a dehumidifier to suck out any and all moisture that may still be in the air.

Bleach comes in handy during this time. After you have clean the area, go over it again with diluted bleach to take care of any other microscope spores that may think they have gotten away.

If you plan on painting the area again use a paint like Kilz to prevent occurrence.

Dispose Properly

It may be tempting to just dump the remains of your water damage into the trash bin or take it to the dump, but careful disposal is required for these type of things.  Get a hold of your city to see what their standards are for caring for such items.
